This Sunday, January 15, is the Second Sunday after the Epiphany. All Saints will celebrate with Eucharists at 8:30 and 10:30a.m., and with special prayers commemorating the life and work of The Rev’d Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (b. January 15, 1929).

Church School and Child Care will commence at 10:30 in the rector’s office and in the Pre-K classroom respectively.

Martine Chahine will lead the Church School in the rector’s office and Child Care will be offered in the Pre-K classroom at 10:30a.m.

Elena Syrett will be the coffee hour host.

All Saints received a lovely card from Bright Side Manor (signed by all the residents) in thanks for the Caroling visit.

A big thank you goes to Annie Byerly for directing the Epiphany Play last Sunday, assisted by Lilly Byerly; another big thank you goes to our children who took part. Epiphany prizes were awarded to all.

The Church and the Child Care Center’s mailbox has been moved (by John Sposato) to the left of the double glass doors in the Atrium entrance.

The Church Office and the Child Care Center will be closed next Monday, January 16, in honor of The Rev’d Martin Luther King, Jr.

All Saints will host a wedding on January 16. Lynne and I will conduct the wedding of Jodi Magee and Sean Molloy at 1:00p.m. I practiced law with Sean in my lawyering days. Jodi grew up in Leonia and her mother (whose birthday is January 16) lives in Leonia’s Senior citizen housing (where Joan Eglis lives).

Annual giving statements with a cover letter from me are being mailed to you this week. Thank you for your support of All Saints.

All Saints has received 30 signed pledge cards and we’re looking for responses from seven households which made a pledge for 2011 but not for 2012. Why not send your signed pledge card to the Church Office today or bring it with you on Sunday. Again, thank you for your support of All Saints.

The Progressive Dinner is coming on Saturday, February 11 with a cocktail reception at the Dougherty’s followed by dinner in parishioner’s homes. Pease sign up this Sunday or by emailing Andrea Pieper. Volunteers are also needed to serve as hosts for the dinner hour.

The Annual Meeting is on Sunday, February 12 in Davidson Hall following a shortened 10:30a.m. service. Please plan to come to this important event and learn more about All Saints. It’s an event where you get to ask the questions! John Sposato will be recognized for his six years of service as a Warden, the maximum number of years that the Diocese permits anyone to serve as Warden at one time.

At the Annual Meeting, Annie Byerly will become a Warden and Alain Chahine will become a Vestry member.

Annie has served on the Vestry and as Coordinator of Children’s Ministries for many years. She is a professional educator – presently a Kindergarten teacher – so she also brings a know how valuable to the Child Care Center. She is the mother of Lily and Maisy, college students, and the spouse of Paul, who is also a teacher.

Alain Chahine is a returning Vestry member. He is also a long-time deputy to Diocesan Conventions. He is the father of Beatrice, a college student, and the spouse of Martine.

Announcements concerning two additional new Vestry members will be made soon.

Paula Kardasis-Maio is the proud mother of Christina Maria, the newest member of the All Saints family, born on January 5. Miss Paula is the Director of the Child Care Center.

All Saints’ dear friend, John Stellingwerf (Sue Cane’s father), passed away on January 1. John was buried on Wednesday, January 4. He will be greatly missed.

The Child Care Center will close at 2:00p.m. on Friday, December 23 following its Holiday Show and Potluck party and re-open on Tuesday, January 3.

The Church Office will also close on December 23 at 2:00p.m. It will be open next week, Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30a.m. to 4:00p.m. It too will be closed on Monday, January 2.

Last Sunday was our annual Caroling Party with stops at The Harborage in Edgewater, John Stellingwerf’s home in Leonia, Bright Side Manor in Teaneck, Isabel Winfield’s home in Tenafly and the party at the rectory. The All Saints’ carolers were Annie Byerly, Lily Byerly, Martine & Alain Chahine, Juanita Barrow, Marjorie Clark, Alina Gonzalez, Joyce Chang, Shawn Condon, me, and at Bright Side, The Rev’d Deacon Joanne O’Neill. At Bright Side we met up with carolers from The Church of the Atonement.

Special thank you’s to Lana Guidetti for making arrangements with Ella Zerga and The Harborage and to the Rev’d Deacon Joanne O’Neill for making arrangements at Bright Side Manor. An extra special thank you to Joyce Chang for keeping us on pitch with her strong, professional voice.

John Stellingwerf was presented with a card signed by the congregation for his 101st birthday and with a hand knitted lap robe from the All Saints’ Shawl Ministry. John sang along with the carols and also sang a solo for us: “The Old Rugged Cross”. It was a fine afternoon.

All Saints has the following events coming up:

On Sunday, January 1, All Saints will worship at one service only at 12noon, in honor of New Year’s Day, which is also the Feast of the Holy Name with special lessons.

On Sunday, January 8, The Feast of the Epiphany will be celebrated at 8:30 and 10:30a.m. At 10:30a.m. the church school will offer an Epiphany (“Three Kings”) pageant, and all will have the opportunity at coffee hour to win “Three Kings” prizes, provided, God-willing, by the rector.

On January 27 and 28, Juanita Barrow, Annie Byerly and Alain Chahine and I will represent All Saints at the Annual Diocesan Convention.

The Progressive Dinner, with a cocktail hour hosted by Ruth and John Dougherty, will be offered on Saturday, February 10 with the All Saints Annual Meeting to follow on February 11. At the Annual Meeting, a new Warden and three new Vestry members will be selected. Also, the Shawl Ministry will receive official recognition and blessing as an “official” All Saints ministry.

This Sunday, December 18, All Saints will worship at two services, 8:30 and 10:30a.m.

The 10:30a.m. service will be a special service of nine lessons and carols followed by the Eucharist.

Vicky Beall will conduct Church School in the rector’s office and Child Care will be offered in the Pre-K classroom.

This Sunday will also be our Annual Caroling Party. Subject to confirmation with Lana Guidetti and the Harborage, we will sing for Ella Zerga about 2:00p.m. (leaving All Saints at 1:30p.m.). Then, we will sing for John Stellingwerf at his home at 226 Fort Lee Road, (a.k.a. The Cane family home) at 3:00p.m. Then on to Brightside Manor, where The Rev’d Joanne O’Neill is a staff member, at 4:00p.m. We’ll sing next for one member of The Church of the Atonement, before completing our journey at the rectory for a party about 5:30p.m. It’s an ambitious schedule, but think of the joy you’ll bring and the fun of singing carols. You do not have to participate in the entire afternoon – please come for what you and your family can do.

The Annual Scholastic Book Fair will be in the Guild Room next week, December 5-9. This year an “Online Book Fair” is available if you can’t make it to All Saints. The link is scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs and is available December 4 – 10. All Saints Child Care Center receives a book of equal value for each book purchased – so this fair helps to stock our school library. Please support it.

Please support All Saints by bringing in or mailing your pledge card. To date, All Saints has received 19 pledges in the amount of $30,816. Last year, altogether, All Saints received 35 pledges in the amount of $55,130. Of the 19 pledges received, eleven are increased pledges, six were the same as 2011 and two pledges are new. The goal for this pledge campaign is 40 pledges and $62,700.

Contemplative Prayer will be offered Saturday at 9:00a.m. On Saturday, December 10, Lynne and I will offer an Advent Quiet Day at The Church of the Atonement from 9:30 – 1:00p.m., including a festive luncheon. Please sign up at All Saints or by contacting Andrea Pieper.

On Sunday, December 11, Saint Nicholas will make his annual visit to All Saints during the 10:30a.m. service.

At a recent Parish Life meeting, it was decided to see what All Saints could do to help needy Leonia families this Christmas.

The Health & Family Services coordinator has requested twelve gift cards ($25 each, if possible) from stores such as Wal-Mart and Target. These cards will be delivered to these families so that their anonymity will be protected and the can choose which present(s) they’d like.

So, there will be twelve tags on a Christmas tree in the Church this Sunday. Please select one (or two) and return the tag and gift card to the Church office no later than Friday, December 16 for distribution. If you have any questions, please contact Andrea Pieper in the Church Office.

This Sunday is All Saints’ Annual Stewardship Sunday. You are asked to place your signed Stewardship Pledge Card in the collection plate or mail it to the church office. Ruth Dougherty will offer a Stewardship Reflection this Sunday. Roy Morrison, Juanita Barrow and Annie Byerly have already offered Stewardship Reflections from the head and heart.

Lana Guidetti would like to thanks All Saints and its Shawl Ministry for the lovely knitted shawl given to her mother, Ella Zerga, for her 98th birthday.

Austin Ashley, son of Terrie McColl, a three-term warden, is continuing the family tradition of public service. Austin was elected to the New Milford Borough Council last Tuesday. Congratulations, Austin!

Andrea Pieper will be on vacation from the end of business this Thursday, November 17 until Monday, November 28.

You’re invited to the Child Care Center’s Thanksgiving Show and Potluck which will be on Wednesday, November 23 at 12noon in Davidson Hall.

You’re also invited to the Community Thanksgiving Service at 8:00p.m, also on Wednesday, November 23, at the Leonia United Methodist Church. Rabbi Barry Schwartz of Congregation Adas Emuno will preach on the topic of “Finding Joy!”

One place where joy can be found is in the presence of God. Annie Byerly proposed a new ministry in her Stewardship Reflection – inviting neighbors to church. The purpose would secondarily be to create new members, and primarily to share hospitality and the joy that is to be found at All Saints. It reminded me of Hymn 304, versus 2 and 3, words by Brian Wren (b. 1936):

I come with Christians far and near
To find, as all are fed,
The new community of love
In Christ’s communion bread.

As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,
Each proud division ends.
That love that made us makes us one,
And strangers now are friends.

Remember that each of us was once a stranger to All Saints. Come break bread this Sunday and feel “that love … makes us one”.

This week, you will receive a Stewardship Letter in the mail from me. The All Saints’ Stewardship Sunday is November 20 – you are requested to return your signed pledge card on or before that date, if possible, by placing it in the collection plate or mailing it to the church office.

Roy Morrison offered an excellent Stewardship reflection last Sunday. He focused on the need to invite our friends to church and the need to improve building utilization, particularly of Davidson Hall.

I would really like it if you invited your friends and neighbors to All Saints. You don’t (and shouldn’t) ask them to become members – just ask them to visit. You can show them how and why All Saints and the worship of God means so much to you.

At the very last minute I was unable to attend Ella Zerga’s 98th birthday party last Sunday, which is my loss. The Rev’d Lynne Bleich Weber, graciously went instead and presented a lovely shawl to Ella, knitted by the All Saints’ Shawl Ministry. So, thank you Lynne and the Shawl Ministry and congratulations to you, Ella: I’ll look forward to your party next year!

Bill McColl will reprise his role of St. Nicholas this year, either December 4 or 11. I am waiting for parents to respond as to which Sunday is better for families with children. Bill and I look forward each year to telling this part of story – and we know that you do also.

Our Church School classes will take a break from its study of the stories in Genesis and Exodus in December to concentrate on the Nativity. Because of school schedules and vacations, All Saints was unable to schedule a “Christmas Pageant” this year, but it’s possible, and even likely, that a children’s event for Epiphany will be planned, possibly for Sunday January 8.

I’m happy to announce that The Rev’d Deacon Joanne O’Neill will preach on November 27, the first Sunday in Advent. Joanne is a fine preacher, and her distinctive style sets her apart among preachers in the Diocese.

You may also hear a Thanksgiving Sermon by Rabbi Barry Schwartz of Congregation Adas Emuno. He will be speaking at the Community Thanksgiving Service which will be held this year at The Leonia United Methodist Church on Broad Avenue at 8:00p.m. on Wednesday, November 23 (the day before Thanksgiving and in my household, Lynne Weber’s birthday).

I continue to think about what a wonderful event “A Fair in the Fall” was for All Saints. This year I’d especially like to thank Pamela Loveless, Bob Fitch, Roy Morrison, Paul Byerly and Barry Edge.

Pamela, a professional artist, contributed a watercolor for the silent auction, which was purchased by Carolyn Barr.

Bob Fitch delighted children and adults all day with his magic tricks (and frankly, just the wonderful “way” he has with children). Bob donated lessons in tap and magic to the silent auction and also worked tirelessly to set up the fair.

Paul Byerly made his red lentil soup, a recipe that entered the Byerly household during Maisie’s semester at The Mountain School in Vermont. It was also great to see Maisie herself on her first trip home from college.

Roy Morrison and Barry Edge each made chili, and together the trio of Byerly, Morrison and Edge made next year’s Fair a culinary destination.

Of course, All Saints eats well on Sundays throughout the year. Nicolette Martin and Vicky Beall put together a fabulous Halloween-inspired coffee hour on October 30, and Joyce and Jen Chang offered a winning Asian-inspired coffee hour last Sunday!

There are always more people to thank – that’s the place that All Saints is.

My prayers are with everyone who suffered through the most recent storm, and particularly those who lost power for several days. Lynne and I lost power from Sunday to Tuesday. At All Saints, a window broke on the Davidson Hall stage. Thanks to Vicky Beall and Tom Haemmerle, plastic and duct tape were put in place of the missing window, and a repair will be made soon.

Sunday, November 20, is Stewardship Sunday at All Saints. You are requested to return your 2012 Pledge Cards at either service. Roy Morrison will give a Stewardship talk this Sunday in place of the Epistle Lesson. Annie Byerly and Juanita Barrow will speak November 13 and Ruth Dougherty will speak on November 20. A Quiet Day with the theme “Blessed are the Peacemakers” will be led by Lynne and me this Saturday at The Church of the Atonement.

On Sunday, November 13, the Parish Life Committee will meet after the 10:30a.m. service.

A community Thanksgiving Service will be held on Wednesday, November 23 at 8:00p.m. at the Leonia United Methodist Church on Broad Avenue. Rabbi Barry Schwartz, from Congregation Adas Emuno, will be the preacher at this multi-faith service.

Two helpful checks have arrived: One is a grant from the Diocese to pay half of the cost of last winter’s emergency roof repair and the other one is an insurance claim payment from The (Episcopal) Church Insurance Company to pay for part of the storm damage to the fence on the eastern edge of All Saints’ property.

Ten members of the Fundraising Committee met last Tuesday evening. They decided that “A Fair in the Fall” will continue next year, and discussed possible changes in its presentation. Your input is always welcome. Please contact Sally Sposato or me. The 2011 Fair had a net profit of $8,170 (to date), an increase of $1,010 over 2010. Congratulations, again, to all!

This Sunday, October 30, All Saints will worship at two services at 8:30 and 10:30a.m.

Annie Byerly will lead the Church School at 10:30a.m. and Cherry Bijan will offer child care in the Pre-K room.

“Nicky and Vicky” (Nicolette Martin and Victoria Beall) are the coffee hour hosts.

Children and adults are invited to wear Halloween costumes this Sunday and receive a special blessing.

Contemplative Prayer will be offered this Saturday at 9:00a.m. in the Guild Room.

I hope you’ve recovered from all of your hard work for “A Fair in the Fall”. The day was an amazing success. Although some expenses are outstanding, the receipts for the Fair were $8,450 up from last year’s $7,826. Congratulations to you all!

Lynne and I have just returned from the Annual Clergy Conference in Shawnee, PA. I will offer you a summary of the conference next week.
