(i) Founded on Nov. 1, 1893, All Saints Episcopal Church has worshipped on its present site on Park Avenue between Broad and Grand Avenues since 1896. All Saints became a parish in 1925. (ii) The Rev’d Dean Weber has served All Saints since 2002 and is the eighth rector. Terrie McColl and John Sposato are the current wardens. (iii) The Rev’d Norman Spicer, the fourth rector, served from 1951-1978. During his tenure the parish house, Davidson Hall, was built (1956) and the interior of the church was redesigned. A transept was added to provide space for the organ pipes. (iv) Davidson Hall was built especially for theater and concerts. The Leonia Players Guild had its home at All Saints from 1956-1988. The Leonia Second Sunday Chamber Musicians performs at All Saints each March. (v) Today All Saints has 100 members and an average Sunday attendance of 44. There are two services, at 8 and 10:30 a.m. (vi) All Saints owns its own child care center in the facility, with more than 70 children enrolled and a director and 19 teachers. (vii) The Jesus Village Church, a Korean Presbyterian Church founded at All Saints, has worshipped there since 1997. All Saints and the JVC had a combined “midnight” Christmas Eve service in 2005 that received front page coverage in The Record. Beginning in 2006, the two congregations have enjoyed a combined Christmas pageant on the Sunday evening before Christmas. (viii) All Saints lends Davidson Hall without fee to Leonia organizations. Each year, Congregation Adas Emuno, the Leonia House School Association and the Overpeck Park Volunteers have their annual fund-raising events at All Saints. (ix) All Saints is active in interfaith and ecumenical events in Leonia, including an interfaith Thanksgiving service, a Good Friday Walk and annual Church Women United Programs. (x) All Saints hosts a weekly Contemplative Prayer group most Saturdays at 9 a.m., which attracts participants from several congregations. (xi) The most recent adult education program was a three part series on “Chinese Religions,” which included viewing rituals from Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, as integrated in the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games (xii) All Saints was the host to a District Confirmation in 2005. In 2009 it expects four young people to be confirmed. (xiii) This Fall, two soloists (a soprano and a tenor) joined the choir. And All Saints is in the last stages of a search for a part-time paid Christian Ed director, who will direct children and youth ministries beginning in January 2009 (xiv) All Saints is also known for its quarterly Quiet Days, co-sponsored by The Church of the Atonement, Tenafly with recent participation of Good Shepherd, Fort Lee and Trinity, Cliffside Park. The next quarterly Quiet Day is on Saturday, December 13: “The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me…to Bring Good News” to be held at All Saints. (xv) This year, the church’s original altar window was restored after being in storage for 50 years. It is in the church’s atrium entrance constructed for the centennial in 1993, located on the East side of the building, and is lit at night. (xvi) All Saints supports these ministries year round or throughout the year: a. Oelhaf House b. The Englewood Hospital Chaplaincy c. The Leonia Ecumenical Youth Ministry d. The Interreligious Fellowship for the Homeless e. Episcopal Relief and Development and with special attention the Millennium Development Goals f. St. Paul’s Community Development Corporation g. Friends for Life h. Center for Food Action, especially near Thanksgiving i. North Porch, The Annual Mother-Daughter Tea j. The Van Ost Institute k. St. Peter’s Haven , raising money and supplies for furnishing back to school backpacks. l. Church Women United
(xvii) All Saints provided a week of volunteer support to the Family Shelter at St. Cecelia’s in Englewood. It also serves as treasurer, among other things, for an informal program that provides bag lunches for day laborers in our area. With other Leonia churches, All Saints is part of a community-wide effort to provide free ESL classes. All Saints hosts two ESL classes, taught by parishioners. |
